Notes
Related to the Purchase and Sale of David Haston's
111 Acres on Grassy Creek in Knox County, TN
-
It appears that the clerk signed David Haston’s
name here; there is no “x” or
anything, just the name David Haston that appears to be very much like the other
references to his name throughout the document. It appears to be different in style (especially the style for
writing “Haston”) from David’s signature on his marriage certificate and
on the Samuel Cowan vs Joseph Haston case. Did David sign some kind of
original document and this is a transcript version that was
added formally into the court records?
-
David
bought the land for $300 in October of 1802 and sold it for
$490 in September of 1806.
-
Isaac
Pruett, David's Grassy Valley neighbor (see the text of both
documents), witnessed the David's deed of conveyance to
Ezekiel Baldwin. An "Isaac Pruett," a few
years later, was the captain of the militia in which David
served in White County, TN. Is this the same man?
-
A
William Jones enlisted for War of 1812 duty in David Haston's
place, later in White County, TN. Was the William Jones
who witnessed the 1802 purchase of this land the same man who
participated in the War of 1812 for David?
-
By the
time David Haston sold this land, Daniel & Joseph Haston
had already moved to White County, TN. They signed the
petition to form White County in July of 1806. David's
land and its sale probably accounts for his later arrival in
White County.
