Prior to 1796, the area that is now Tennessee was largely an untamed western frontier that belonged to the state of North Carolina. During the 1760s, "long hunters" from VA and NC, such as Daniel Boone and Big Foot Thomas Spencer, made forays into this game-rich territory. After the Revolutionary War, white settlers began to encroach upon the Cherokee and Chickasaw lands as squatters. Their unwanted intrusions resulted in the shedding of much blood and the loss of many lives. It is that historical context that frames the genealogical and historical study of Daniel Haston's family in their East TN and Middle TN years. If only we knew some of the true stories that Daniel could tell us, if he were alive today!
