Big Pigeon
Baptist Church - Cocke County, TN |
|
|
Now, the Little Pigeon River flows out of
the Great Smokey Mountains National Park and into Sevierville, TN (Sevier
Co, TN). The Little Pigeon is located about 10-15 miles south west of the Big Pigeon
River. The location of the Big Pigeon Baptist Church was about 15
miles from its closest distance from the Little Pigeon River. This
gives us some idea regarding the distance that Abraham Hiestand's family
had to travel to church. |
In 1793, Jefferson County (now TN, then NC) contained the areas where Big Pigeon Baptist Church was located and where Little Pigeon River flowed out of the mountains toward the area that is now Sevierville, TN. By 1797, Jefferson County had been split into three counties. Big Pigeon Baptist Church was then located in Cocke County and the Little Pigeon River was in Sevier County. An 1803 delinquent tax list for Sevier County, TN indicates that Abraham did live in the area that became Sevier County, TN, although he had apparently moved away by that time.
