Editorial Comment
"Jane
Haston" (from the page above) was the wife of David
& Peggy's youngest son, William C. Haston. She was "Jane
Denney Haston," daughter of William and Patty (Burnett)
Denney. The dates of his and her births, recorded in
this Bible record, are the same as their dates of birth in
William Carroll Haston's 1898
biographical sketch. Their marriage date is one year
off, either in this Bible record (1847) or in the biographical
sketch (1848). |

Loucinda L. Haston,
daughter of David & Margaret Haston, had one* child (Edward

Was this Catherine (Katherine) Moore associated in someway with the
Mr. Moore of that relationship? She (at age 13) was in the David & Margaret
Haston household, with the "Hastion" [sic] surname, on the 1850
census.
*Note: The 1900 Warren Co, TN census indicates that
Loucinda had borne only one child and that child was no longer
living. Edward Cyrus Moore Haston died in 1898. |

Question: Whose
family Bible was this originally? Was it the family Bible of David
Haston, son of Daniel Haston, that was passed down to his son, Isaac T.
Haston, Sr. or William Carroll Haston, Sr.? It appears that all of
the entries, beyond those of David & Margaret Haston's children, are
related to the families of Isaac T. Haston, Sr. and William Carroll
Haston, Sr. These two sons of David & Margaret Haston did live very
close to each other, on or near the original Daniel & David Haston home
place. Their families would have grown up together, so it is not
surprising that entries related to both of their families would have been
entered into this record.
Speculation: It would
appear that, perhaps, Mrs. Isaac T. Haston, Sr. (Elizabeth Sparkman
Haston) was the person entering the information into this record, at least
the latter part of it. Since we do not have access to a copy of any
of the original pages, other than page ten, it is impossible to know if
the same person wrote all of it.
The dates would suggest that Elizabeth Sparkman Haston
wrote these (or, at least the later of these) entries. She died on
April 1, 1882 and entries into the record were being made up until
the time of her husband's death in 1876, just six years before
hers. Jane Denney Haston (Mrs. William Carroll Haston, Sr.) didn't
die until August 1, 1886 and her husband lived until January 11,
1902. If either one of them had been keeping the record, it
would seem that Elizabeth Sparkman Haston's 1882 death date would have
been recorded.
Also, the majority of the entries
(by far) are for the Isaac T. Haston, Sr. family, not the William Carroll
Haston, Sr. family.
Isaac T. was a year older than
William Carroll, perhaps it is for that reason that he was the
administrator of his father's (David Haston's) estate settlement.
That fact might also suggest that it was he who received David Haston's
family Bible, if this was indeed from David's Bible.
Probably only Elizabeth or Isaac T.
would have remembered the dates on which they "professed
Religion." That information is not given for anyone else.
Note:
The location of the original pages of
this family Bible record is not known to us now. This family
record from this Bible was, at one time, in the possession of
J.D. Haston of Sparta, TN. Apparently, from what J.D. and others
have said, there were other pages, in addition to these family
record pages, that came from this family Bible. Notice that the copy
of the original page shown above is numbered as page 10. What
was the content of pages 1-9? Margaret Rhinehart, local historian
and genealogist in Van Buren County, TN, has been quoted as saying that
she remembered holding these pages in her hand. The implication was
that there were several or numerous pages that made up the complete
record. J.D. Haston inherited
these pages from his uncle, the late David Rhea Haston of Sparta.
J.D. Haston told Wayne Haston (December 2000) that he once possessed these
pages, but that someone borrowed them for the purpose of attempting to get
into the Daughters of the American Revolution and this person never
returned the pages. J.D. could not remember who that person was.
