DAVID HASTON OF WHITE COUNTY, TENNESSEE

          A large part of the family passes under the name of Haston, particularly those who remained in Tennessee, and that includes just about all of the descendents of David, the son of Daniel.
   
          DAVID HASTON (6 May 1777 to 1 Apr 1860). -David, son of Daniel Hasting (Haston) (about 1735- 1826) was born in Virginia. On 6 May 1800, David married Margaret Roddy (8 Sept 1785 to 24 Feb 1857). In the biography of William Carroll Haston, son of David, it was said:
          "The parents of our subject (Wm. Carroll Haston), David and Margaret Roddey Hastons, were probably natives of Virginia, and became well to do farming people of this county (Van Buren) where they owned a fine place of two hundred acres. Both were active and faithful members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and before a house of worship was erected in their community, services were often held in their home. Politically, the father was an Old-line Whig. Their family numbered twelve children, namely:

Editorial Note:  Information on Thomas C. Haston was discovered in the late 1990s.  He married Margaret __?__ and left Tennessee for Missouri after the 1850 census.  After Margaret died he remarried in Butler County, MO in 1852.  He died in 1853.  His two older sons moved to St Francois County, MO.  The two youngest children went to unrelated families in Arkansas.  We do not know what happened to the two middle children.

WILLIE B. HASTON

          WILLIE B. HASTON (11 July 1806 to 12 Oct 1862).- Willie B., son of David Haston (1777) married the first time to a lady whose name is not available. His second wife was Mary Durham, whom he married on 13 July 1845. Willie was killed at Perryville, Kentucky, one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.  Willie B died 12 Oct 1862.
 

Editorial Note:  Mr. Hasting, like some other Haston family researchers, confused David's son, "Willie B. Haston" with a grandson of Joseph Haston by the same name.  David's son, "Willie B." did not die at the Battle of Perryville.  It seems that he lived in TN into adulthood, but then moved to Arkansas.  We assume that he died there.

          WILLIAM D. HASTON (      1825 to           ) son of Willie B. Haston (11 Jul.1806 to        ) Married Nancy Adeline Riddles on 8 Jan. 1852 in Van Buren County, Tenn. There is a deed on record at Danville, Yell County, Arkansas, whereby the SW 1/4 SW 1/4 Sec 14 Twp. T N. R. 25 W., 40 acres, was deeded to Wm. D. Hastin dated 13 Mar. 1869. See Record Book "B" at p. 264. W.D.'s family was listed in the 1870 Census taken in Yell County, as follows:

James married to Della Babb on Jan. 28, 1885, in Yell County--She was 16 and he was 28. See Mar. Record at Danville Book "E" at p. 216.
          It appears that after his father's death, William D. moved to Yell County, Ark. The land he bought is in the western part of that County.

          RACHEL HASTON (1831 to           ). -Rachel, daughter of Willie B. Haston (1806) married James Lewis Shockley* on 27 Sept 1854.

          JAMES M. HASTON (1832 to           ). -James, son of Willie B. Haston (1806) married on the 30th day of August 1854 to Almira Carter (1835). He was a blacksmith. He was, probably killed in the Civil War.

          LUCINDA HASTON (1847 to           ). -Lucinda, daughter of Willie B. Haston (1806) married a Trodler and died in Chicago, Ill.

          MARTHA HASTON (1849 to           ). -Martha, daughter of Willie B. Haston (1806) married a Waddles of Dallas, Texas

          NATHAN LOREN A (1851 to 1895). -Nathan, son of Willie B. Haston (1806) married Mary Theodocia George, known as "Docia", and moved to Yell County, Arkansas, where he is found in the 1880 Census as follows:

          William D. Haston and David S. Haston shown in the aforementioned Census in Yell County, Arkansas, were brothers of Nathan Lorensa Haston. Mary Theodocia "Docia" George was the daughter of John and Sarah Jane George. It appears that the George family moved en masse to Yell County, Arkansas, from Tennessee. Yell County still has many of the family, and town of Mr. George was named for them. "Docia" is buried in the Mt. George Cemetery in Yell County, and her stone shows that she was born 27 Dec. 1860 and died 30 Dec. 1937. Nathan Haston died at Coleman, Oklahoma.

The marriage records referred to above are those for Yell County, Ark., in the Courthouse at Danville, Ark. Charlie M. Haston (1887) and his wife are buried in the Mt. George Cemetery near "Docia." It is said that "Docia" married again after Nathan's death, but her head stone at Mt. George does not show that.

          WILLIAM D. HASTON (1860) son of Willie B. Haston (1806) brother to Nathan Lorensa Haston (1851) married S.W. McLemore (1861) on 16 Sept 1880 in Yell County, Arkansas. (Marriage Record "C" p. 224, at Danville Ark.)

          DAVID S. HASTON (1857) son of Willie B. Haston (1806) brother to Nathan Lorensa Haston (1851) married Mollie McLemore (1860) in Yell County, Arkansas on Sept. 16, 1880 (See Marriage Record "C" p. 225). Thus, the two brothers married on the same day--apparently to sisters.

Editorial Note:  We know of no documented source that identifies the full middle name of this son of David, although it very possible that this kind of documentation does exist.  His name does appear in some documents as Daniel MC. Haston / Hastain or Daniel McHaston / McHastain.  Proof of his middle name would be valuable information for Haston / Hastain family researchers.

          DANIEL McCOMISKY (HASTON) HASTAIN (25 Dec. 1808 to 17 Jan. 1875). Daniel, son of David Haston (1777) married Anne N. Greene (1811 to 13 Apr. 1839). Daniel Moved to Missouri, where he began to spell his name "Hastain." Annie N. Greene died in Missouri. After her death, Daniel married Martha Jane Wade (1841). Daniel's family was listed in the 1850 Census taken in Henry County, Missouri, in Tebo Twp.

          Thus, it Appears Daniel moved to Missouri between 1833 and 1835.

          In 1859, one Obershiner conveyed to Daniel McHastain the SE of the SE sec. 5 Twp. 40 R. 22 W in Benton County, Mo. (Book "A" p. 406) so we may assume that Daniel moved to Benton County in 1859. This land was about a mile North of the center of Warsaw, Missouri. On Apr. 13, 1866, Daniel, joined by his wife, Martha Jane Wade Hastain, conveyed 58 acres to one Drake (Book H. p.71), expressly reserving the 2 acres on which his homestead stood.
          The 1870 Census               for Henry County, Tebo, Twp., listed as living with John, his two brothers:

          Pleasant Dawson Hastain was admitted to practice law in Benton County, Missouri, in April 1877. See Register of Attorneys in the Office of the Circuit Clerk at Warsaw. He became very successful. A little town on the South Bank of the Lake of the Ozarks in Benton County was named Hastain in Pleasant's honor--but he never lived there.

          It is said that Daniel McComisky Hastain died at Warsaw, Mo. That is probably true, but it is doubted that he was buried there; for a search which consumed the better part of a day and included a visit to every cemetery within miles of Warsaw failed to find his grave.
   
          Daniel McComisky's family is shown in Genealogical Serendipity by J. Sharon Johnson Doliante of Fairfax, Virginia, as follows: And a Biographical Records of Johnson and Pettis Counties of Missouri by Chapman Publishing Co. of Chicago, Ill., now in the Library of Congress under No. F472 J6 P8 recites that Daniel came from Knox County, Tenn.

          Daniel McComisky Hastain and his first wife, Anne Greene, were both born in White County, Tennessee, and they married there in 1827. Anne died in Missouri, as did Daniel.

          JOHN GREENE HASTAIN (1828 to 13 Sept 1905).- John, son of Daniel McComisky Hastain (1808) was born in White County, Tennessee, and died at Cripple Creek, Colorado, the famous gold mining town. He married Martha Jane Austin (1836 to 4 Mar 1928). She died in Brawley, Calif.

          FANNIE DAVID HASTAIN (1863 to Mar. 1907). - Fannie, daughter of John Greene Hastain (1828) married James Wilson Arnold. James was murdered in Beggs, Oklahoma, in 1909.

    was born 13 July 1923, and Dixie Ray Arnold who was born on --- Aug 1928
    and who married on 10 Feb 1951 to John Karl Van Ess who was born on 23
    Oct 1937.

     children: Mary Margaret Beckenridge born 30 Nov 1925, and who married

     Joy Breckenridge, born 12 June 1936 and who married the second time to
     Ervin Williams, by who she had a son named Gerald Arnold Williams born

    Beggs Okla. Who is a Colonel in the Army and living in Alexandra, Va.

     who married Jack Cavenah who is now deceased. She was living in 1965 at
     Shiprock, New Mexico, and was teaching in a Government Indian School

          JAMES W. HASTAIN (1864 to July 1920).- James, son of John Greene Hastain (1828) died at Brawley, California.

          NAPOLEON BONAPARTE HASTAIN (1866            ).-         Napoleon, son of John Greene Hastain (1828) died at San Diego, California.

          EVALINE HASTAIN (1870            ).-  Evaline, daughter of John Greene Hastain (1828) died at an early age.

          FLORA BELL  HASTAIN (1872             ).- Daughter of John Greene Hastain (1828) married Ed Eli, She had 3 children. She resided in 1965 in Benning, California.

          STELLA HASTAIN (1874 to1917).- Stella, daughter of John Greene Hastain (1828) died in San Diego, Calif.

          HARVEY E. HASTAIN* (3 May 1877 to            ).- Harvey, son of John Greene Hastain (1828) married 13 Sept 1903 to Emma M. Barnes at Anaconda, Colo. She was born 25 Dec 1884. They were living in 1965 at San Diego, Calif.

          JAMES PRESTON HASTAIN (1830 to         ).- James, son of Daniel Mc Cumisky Hastain (1808) was born in White County, Tennessee, and died in Appleton City, Missouri. He married Octavia Hincle who was born in Kentucky in 1847.

      son, named Edwin Hastain, Jr., who resided in 1965 at
      Phoenix, Ariz.

          DAVID MONTGOMERY HASTAIN (1832 to 1860 OR thereabouts).- David, son of Daniel McComisky Hastain (1808) is thought to have died on a cattle drive to Yuba County, Calif., in 1858 or soon after arrival in Calif.

          WOODSON ASBURY HASTAIN (8 OCT 1835 to 18 Feb 1911).- Woodson, son of Daniel McCumisky Hastain (1808) married in Saline Co., Missouri, on 28 March 1865 to Sarah Jane Walker, daughter of Pleasant and Missouri Adeline Lindsay Walker (22 June 1847 to 19 May 1936).

     who was born near Clinton, Mo., and who married the first time
    to Eustace Lake on 31 July 1918, but was divorced, and married
    a second time to Arthur Collins, from whom she was also
    divorced. She had two children by Lake and two children by
    Collins.

          ANNA ADALINE HASTAIN (28 Mar 1870 to           ).- Anna,  daughter of Woodson Asbury Hastain (1835) married on 16 Jan 18 5 at Santa Barbara California, to Bendix Bolst (3 Sept 1870 to      ) both now deceased. They had five children and numerous grandchildren.

          EMMA LENA HASTAIN (24 Jun 1873 to           ).- Emma,  daughter of Woodson Asbury Hastain (1835) married 27 June 1894 at Clinton, Mo., to Thomas Burch Wilson who was born in Warsaw. They are both now deceased. They had five children and several grandchildren.

          BERTHA MAY HASTAIN (18 Apr 1875 to           ).- Bertha,  daughter of Woodson Asbury Hastain (1835) married on 16 Oct 1895 to Clinton Joseph Shelby McCaun (17 Nov 1869 to 20 May 1918) who was born near Lucas, Mo., and died at Colorado, Springs, Colorado. She at last account was living in 1965 at Colorado Springs. They had five children and several grandchildren.

          SEREPTA AVERY HASTAIN (7 June 1879 to           ).- Serepta,  daughter of Woodson Asbury Hastain (1835) never married, and at last account in 1965, was living at Kansas City, Mo.

          GEORGE WOODSON HASTAIN (6 July 1857 to 22 Jan 1890).- George, son of Woodson Asbury Hastain (1835) was born near Clinton, Mo., and in 1965 he was in a convalescent home in Kansas City, Mo. He married on 9 Mar 1904 at Clinton, Mo., to Bertha Frances Baugh (4 Dec 1883 near Leesville, Mo., now deceased)

          SARAH FRANCES HASTAIN (20 Aug 1914 to           ).- Sarah,  daughter of George Woodson Hastain (1881) married on 18 Aug 1934 to William Hugh McLaughlin and had a child named Kathleen McLaughlin born 28 March 1946 who married one Randall Lynn Vest and had one child names Hugh Scott Vest.

          SARAH "SADIE" HASTAIN (9 Mar 1884 to            ).- "Sadie,"  daughter of Woodson Asbury Hastain (1835) was born near Clinton, Mo., married on 8 June 1904 to William Albert Ellett of Clinton, Mo., who was born 14 Jan 1873 and died 22 May 1920 at Tulsa. She married a second time on 22 Feb 1925 at Sapulpa, Oklahoma to William S. Peterson. She had no children.

          MARIA JANE HASTAIN (26 Dec 1885 to           ).- Maria,  daughter of Woodson Asbury Hastain (1835) was born near Clinton, Mo., and married on 17 Dec 1905 to Lant Clayton Farnham of Clinton, Mo., who was born 22 may 1883 at Sedalia, Mo. They had a son named Lant Clayton Farnham, Jr. born 6 Aug 1909 at Sepulpa, Oklahoma, who married Frances Weeks and had three children and two grandchildren.

          MAUDE GLASGOW HASTAIN (20 May 1890 to           ).- Maude,  daughter of Woodson Asbury Hastain (1835) was born near Clinton, Mo., married on 25 June 1913 at Clinton to Everett Harrison Carnick (4 Mar 1889 to 6 Nov 1948 at Kansas City, Mo.). She had a DAR No. of 64735, but she had no children.

          MARY ANN HASTAIN (1837           ).- Mary Ann,  daughter of Daniel McComisky Hastain (1808) married as his second wife to Abner H. Dice (1820) who was born in Kentucky. They resided in Benton County, Mo., and had eight children:

          ERNEST N. HASTON (26 Mar 1877 to 19 May 1956).- Ernest, son of George Washington Haston (1854), married Vollie Sparkman on 26 July 1904. He was Secretary of State for Tennessee longer than any other before him. The following is extracted from the Nashville Banner of the 19 May 1956: Ernest N. Haston was elected to the Senate for the 60th and 61st Annual Assemblies for Tenn., 1917-1921, representing the counties of Van Buren, Bledsoe, Cumberland, Meigs, Rhea, Sequatchie and White. He was born near Cummingsville, Van Buren County, March 26, 1877, son of George W. and Sarah Schockley [sic] Haston. He attended the Public Schools of Van Buren County, graduating in 1899 from Burritt College, Spencer, Van Buren County, Tenn. He studied law and was admitted to the Bar in 1902. He married in 1904 to Vollia Hathleen Sparkman. His children, were Evelyn and Ernest Jr. He died in Nashville on 19 May 1956 and is buried in Mount Olive Cemetery. His dau., Evelyn, died in 1966 and his don, Ernest, died very young. His marriage to Vollie Sparkman was on 26 July 1904.

           ISAAC T. HASTON (8 Jan 1858 to 14 Jan 1887).- Isaac, known as "shack", son of Isaac T. Haston (1827) married Julia Ann Felton (23 Sept 1863 to 27 July 1944). Shack was killed in a train wreck at Burnside, Ky. After his death, his brother "Billy" left his wife and took Julia and went to Texas to live with her. However, "Shack" and Julia are buried in the Haston Cemetery.

          MARGARET ANN HASTON (5 Dec 1850 to 11 Jan 1924).- "Maggie", daughter of William Carroll Haston (1828) married Green, Madison, Alexander, Franklin Shepherd, known as "Doc" for short. They moved to Yell County, Arkansas where they died. Their son, Dalton Shepherd, returned to Van Buren Bounty to visit his grandfather and died there. He is buried in the private cemetery on the old Wm. Carroll Haston Farm. Maggie and Doc (1 Jan 1847 to 17 Nov 1928) are buried in Brearley Cem. at Yell County, Arkansas.

          DAVID LAVENDER "VAN" HASTON (6 Sep 1852 to 27 Nov 1914).- "Van", son of William Carroll Haston (1828) married Tabitha Davis (6 Feb 1854 to 4 Jul 1927). They are buried in the Union Cemetery.

          WILLIAM CARROLL. HASTON, Jr. (8 Feb 1857 to 17 Jul 1890).- William Carroll Haston, Jr., was elected State Representative, and while visiting the Capitol Building in Nashville, fell from a high point of the building and was killed by the fall. He is buried at Union Cem. He married Sarah Lobellia Morgan (7 Aug 1863 to 1 July 1914). She is buried in the Union Cemetery also.

          DAVID LAVENDER "VAN" HASTON (24 Sept. 1848 to 2 June 1932) son of Montgomery Greenville Haston (1823) and Rachel Wheeler and Sarah McReynolds, Rachel was born in Sequatchie County, Tenn. David married Susan Virginia Riddles (14 Oct. 1848 to 31 Jan. 1914). David and Virginia are both buried in Highland Cemetery in Sparta, Tenn. David adopted a son named Herbert Clint Haston (1875 to 1950). After Susan died, David married again to Jenny somebody, who last name is not know to us, but they ad no children.

          HERBERT CLINT HASTON (1875 to 1950) adopted son of David Haston (1848). He married a Lue Ella somebody whose last name is unknown. She was born in 1892 and died in 1947. She and Herbert are both buried in the Highland Cemetery at Sparta.

I have information on Sophia Haston daughter of William Carroll Haston who married Frank Davis. I have obtained a copy of her death certificate and it states she was born 13 Jun 1867 in Tennessee and died 4 Dec 1948 in Dallas, Texas.

She is buried in Dallas Texas in Laurel Land Cemetery.  Death certificates states that her parents were W.C. Haston and Jane Denny both born in Tennessee.  She had resided in Texas for 22 years when she died. 

Her husband Herbert Frank Davis also buried in Laurel Land. He died May 30, 1960 at 95 yrs old and was born in Tennessee August 2, 1864.  His father listed as Jimmie Davis and mother unknown.
