The Van Buren County Historical Journal Vol. IV, 1984 had a 27 page
article on the Passons family!! I thought I could just walk over to the
book shelves and pick up my copy of that Van Buren County Historical
Journal, but it isn't there. Nor any of the other places I looked. But it
is in this house someplace!!! Heaven only knows if or when it will ever
appear again!! I don't have time to do a thorough search right now. I
will be surpised if Jean Landon Wallace won't come up with quite a lot of
information - probably a lot of the information that I have listed. But
better that you have it twice than not to get it at all, I suppose. I do
not and have not belonged to the Van Buren Historical Society, I was just
fortunate to be able to secure a copy of this particular issue of their
journal. I photocopied about 4 pages and it had the following
information.

I have not found Arles (T. A.) Passons but wonder if he is the same
person as Tilford A. Passons
Tilford born 26, 1818
married 24 August 1836
married Sarah Moore Hutson
born 18 Jan 1820
daughter of Sarah Knowles and Matthias Hutson, grandfather Rev. Abel
Hutson
Tilford and Sarah had at least 8 children
Tilford and Sarah are buried at Mt. Pisgah Cem.

William J. T. Passons was the son of Major Passons and Anna Anderson.
There are several Passons pictures in this article. A picture on page 48
of William J. T. Passons and his son William Dalton Passons is quite
good.
William Dalton Passons married Martha Wallace Swafford.

William J. T. Passons had another son, Major, who married Agnes Mitchell.
I do NOT know if this is the Agnes (Agness) listed in your list. But she
is the only Agnes I have found anywhere.

This is all I can scare up on the Passons. Hope you can figure out who is
who and where or if they fit into the list.

few more people with as much information for you, you will be doing quite
well!! I realize that it is a tremendous job, but I am delighted that you
have undertaken the job. Thanks.

Daisy Mays was born 13 Feb. 1884 and died 15 Feb. 1884, the daughter of
Sarah Elizabeth Warren and Jacob Anderson Mays.

This would not be the Dasie Mays listed as a member of Old Union Church
as "our" Daisy was born and died prior to 1893 when "that" Dasie joined
the Old Union Church. The Daisey who was born and died in 1884 is the
only Daisy Mays that I know anything about.

There is no hard evidence that James' middle initial is for his mother's
maiden name, but some family members report the "T" to be Trager.

James was a Whig in politics. He was six feet tall, weighed 170 pounds,
had light hair and blue eyes.

James and Hannah Scoggin were married in Carter County, Tennessee, in 1806,
presumably where his father, Francis lived and later (1807) moved to White County,
Tennessee. James began purchasing tracts of land in 1818 which constituted his
Parker Cove farm at White Seminary. James died, at age 91, on March 1, 1876 at the
home of Jesse Scoggin Williams, his son, in Hickory Valley. James is buried at
"White Seminary" in a private burial lot which was reserved for the Williams family
on his farm at White Seminary, and his father, Francis, is also buried there.

James Williams' farm originally consisted of 1400 acres. At the time James failed
financially (1850), the farm consisted of only 420 acres. He had signed a large
amount of security debts which he had to pay and was forced to sell his farm to
Samuel Parker. Samuel Parker told his grandson that James was deeply worried about
selling the land on which his ancestors and family members were buried.
A new deed was prepared in which the burial ground consisting of one acre was excluded
therefrom and dedicated to the Williams forever. This burial lot is about two hundred f
eet from where the White Seminary building was located. Cemetery records in White County,
TN show gravesites of the following in White Seminary Cemetery as Benjamin Williams,
1810-1835, Francis Williams, 1833, and M.J. Williams 1861-62. It is not known why
other family members' graves are not noted, however, there are undoubtedly others*
such as James, himself, and his wife, Hannah Scoggin Williams. There may be unmarked
Williams' graves or stones that once stood that may have been destroyed due to time
and the elements.
*In locating this cemetery in April of 2001, sixteen graves were found to be in the
Williams portion of the cemetery. Only those graves of Francis Williams, Ben Williams,
and the infant M.J. Williams were marked.

James' family convinced him to go to Texas when he sold his farm.
This perhaps explains the migration of James' sons, Jesse and Elizabeth, and Madison
(Mathias) and Louisa Williams to Honey Grove, Fannin County, Texas.
It is reported that they returned to Hickory Valley, Tennessee but that Madison and
Louisa remained in Fannin County with their two older sons, James Thomas and William D.,
and Fannin County was the birthplace of their other children: Abraham Lansden,
(an Ordained Cumberland Presbyterian Minister), Milton, and Mary Elizabeth.

Jesse Scoggin and Elizabeth Whiteside Tate Williams had ten children. Of the ten, only
four grew to adulthood. Those who died young were: Montgomery, Sarah T., Martha J.,
Vincent B., Amarilla L., Trent C.

Jesse was affiliated with the Whigs and later declared himself a Democrat.
He was an Elder in the Old Union Presbyterian Church, was an accomplished furniture
maker and worker with iron, owned two sawmills--one was the largest in White County and
located in Hickory Valley and the other in Bickman.

While I do not know if this particular Waman Knowles was a member of this church,
there was a Waman Knowles, born 1860 in White Co., TN who was the son of Peter Knowles
and Anna Swindell Knowles. His siblings were Elizabeth (born Nov. 23, 1853 and
died before 1910), Christopher "Kit" Knowles (born Jan. 15, 1856 and died before 1894),
and Diana Jane Knowles (born Feb. 3, 1858 and died Sept. 7, 1931). I do not know when
this Waman died and if and to whom he married. Will share info on the Knowles family
who are descendants of John W. Knowles, born 1749 in Ireland.

or of a well left to mark the location of the Mays home.

Jacob Anderson Mays family also lived in Cherry Creek, White Co., TN.

Pres. Church. The membership Roll shows # 105 Mrs. Jake Mays, #106 Ida
Mays, #107 Will Mays, #108 John Mays. Ida, Will and John were children of
Jacob Anderson Mays and wife Sallie Warren Mays. This from Cherry Creek
Methodist Church Minutes 1800-1833 (think this should be 1933) microfilm.

You asked about Sallie Warren. My grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Warren
and called Sallie always so far as I know. She was the daughter of
Bluford Warren and Sarah A. Gracey. She was born 25 April 1861 in White
Co. TN. The Warrens owned property in Hickory Valley, White Co. TN. at
some point in time. She died at my Aunt Ida's (Ida Jane Mays Hill) 2 June
1941 at Owens X Roads, Madison Co. AL. She is buried in Old Union
Cemetery. She was the wife of Jacob Anderson Mays.

"My Sallie Warren" had sisters Martha Alice Warren (married Shannon
Williams), Mary Warren (married Elias Gillentine), Eliza Warren (married
John M. Hayes), Emma Warren (married a Wimberly). Emma was born 6 months
after her father died).

Sarah Gracey and Bluford Warren were married 8 Dec. 1849

After the death of Bluford Warren, Sarah A. Gracey Warren married Spencer
M. Parker. They had at least 3 children. Sarah A. Gracey Warren Parker
died in Texas 23 July 1924 in or near Fort Worth, TX where she is buried.
I have a death certificate for her. Sarah Ann Gracey Warren and S. M.
Parker were married 2 Nov. 1865.

Do you want me to give information on the Warren girls for the Old Union
Cemetery information?

By the way, I notice S. M. Parker and Sarah Parker on your list of
members. The Parker that my great grandmother married was Spencer M.
Parker whose first wife was Sarah E. Brogden. I do not know the Brogden
information other than that they were married 15 Jan. 1861. The Brogdens
were active in the Hickory Valley area. Let me know how much you want me
to dig into the Parker/Brogden connection. I do not know if they had
children, but I would suspect that they did. I hope some one else will
send you information on the Parker/Brogden family.
