Source: Frames # 000842-000852 of White Co, TN microfilm #157, County Clerk Miscellaneous Records, 1807-1899.  Also see: Frames # 000628-000631 of White Co, TN microfilm #152, Book B of Volume A-B Probate (Estate) Records, 1807-1899.

Question:  Lee Brogden was the son of H.D. & Martha Jane Sutherland Brogden (who died in 1877).  Since Lee's father was H.D. Brogden (who died in 1938), why did C.T. Haston become the guardian of Lee Brogden when Daniel Sutherland died (apparently sometime in the early 1880s)?  What was the relationship between Daniel Sutherland and Martha Jane Sutherland who married H.D. Brogden?

Cummings
   [Submit Information]

Joseph Cummings  (a founding Elder)
  • According to the Union Church register, "Joseph Cummings" (the same man who was ordained as an elder in 1811) died in 1870.  This information does not match information provided by Cummings family researchers.  See the following information submitted by Hoyte Cook (cookengr@earthlink.net).  (Perhaps the person who entered the 1870 death date in the register confused Joseph Cummings, Jr. (who died near 1870) with Joseph Cummings, Sr. (who was the founding elder that died in 1853).

    • The Joseph Cummings that is recorded as an Elder in Old Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1811 would have been Joseph Cummings "Sr." (1762-1853) - who came to the area of the Caney Fork River - now White & Van Buren Counties - around 1805.  He was born in Faquier County, Virginia and lived for a while in the area of Henry/Patrick Counties, Virginia.  He was a soldier in the American Revolution.  He is buried in the Stony Point Cemetery in Van Buren County, Tennessee.
    • Joseph, Sr's. son, Joseph Cummings, Jr. (1802-1868), may have also been involved in Old Union to some extent. Joseph Cummings, Jr. was the first Trustee of Van Buren County. Four of his sons were in the Confederate Army, and, at age 60, Joseph, Jr. joined the Army also.  He served in the 22nd Tennessee Infantry, and is believed to have also served with the 38th Tennessee Infantry.  It is documented in the Diary of Carroll Henderson Clark that "Sqr. Jos. Cummings" was present when the Army of Tennessee retreated from Nashville in the snow and freezing rain in January, 1865.  The last will and testament of Joseph Cummings, Jr. is on file in Van Buren County, Tennessee.  He and his wife Ann Denney are buried in Big Fork Cemetery in Van Buren County.
    • Joseph Cummings III (1838-1892) may have been involved with Old Union.  His wife Sophia (Kirkland) is listed among the members.  Joseph III served with the 16th Tennessee Infantry in the 1860's War.  He and his wife Sophia are buried at Eureka Cemetery in Warren County, Tennessee, near Highway 30.
    • According to Masonic records, John L. Cummings (1840-1866), brother of Joseph Cummings, III, was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church ... and that would very likely have been Old Union Church.  He is buried at Big Fork cemetery.  He, along with his brother Joseph III, served in the 16th Tennessee Infantry in the 1860's War.

Note:  The birth & death dates for "Daisy Mays" stated above were given by Martha Stewart Geyer, a descendent of this Mayes/Mays family.  If the infant daughter "Daisy Mays" (of Jacob Anderson & Sallie Elizabeth Warren Mays) died in 1884, then who was the "Dasie Mayes" that joined Old Union by experience in 1893?

Mary Miller
  • Joined: September 20, 1883 by experience (the minutes say she joined, September 1, 1883)
  • John Harmon Miller (see above) had a daughter named Mary (born: 1868).  She may have been the Mary Miller who joined Sep.1883.

Mary E. Miller married E. B. Blackburn in 1890 - White County, TN. Darthula or Dorthula (Dorothy) married William M. Hale in 1878 - White County, Tennessee. Both Darthula and Mary passed on in Grayson County, Texas. Their parents are listed on the 1870 & 1880 Census as John Harmon Miller and Clementine Lewis of White County, TN.  A photo is known to have existed of Mary E. Miller.

I have a great grandmother, Mary E. Miller born in 1868, who married in White County, Tennessee to my great grandfather, E. Brinton Blackburn on 12 Jan 1890 in White County, Tennessee. I have a digital copy of their marriage license. They migrated to Texas between Jan to November 1890. Mary's birth date is recorded as 14 Feb 1868 and died in Texas on 19 Aug 1920. Her middle name was Elizabeth. I am still researching if this is indeed the correct Mary E. Miller whose parents may have been John Harmon & Clementine (Lewis) Miller.

Samuel Miller
  • Joined: November 19, 1873 by experience
  • Possibly: John Harmon Miller's father, born 1787 in VA and died before 1880 in White County, TN
  • Cannot be John Harmon Miller's brother (Samuel Miller, Jr.) who married Frankie Fannie Frasier, daughter of Thomas & Mary ("Polly") H. Wilson Fraiser.  He died On August 7, 1848.

Note: There was a Sam N. Miller, born on August 18, 1865 and died on February 21, 1927, who is buried at Old Union.  He was the son of John Riley (Sr.) and Josephine Myers Miller.  He was the husband of Elizabeth Parker.  Was he the same man as this "Samuel Miller?"  His 1873 conversion date makes that unlikely, since he would have only been eight years old at the time.  In that era, young people were not generally received into the church "by experience" at such a young age.

From: Justine Miller (JMiller585@aol.com)
I have a William G. Mooneyham, b. June 1845 in TN.  He was the son of John Hezekiah Mooneyham and Mary Elizabeth Grissom.  He married Nancy Jane Scott, b. 18 June 1846 in Warren County, TN.  He moved to Waxahachie, Ellis Co., TX and died there or in Tarrant County, TX on 11 Mar 1929.  Nancy Jane Scott, d. May 1925, but I don't know where.

Note:  We have no evidence to indicate that this couple was the same couple as the one mentioned in the Old Union church register.  Please contact us if you have evidence to support or contradict this possibility.

From: Carol D. Monroe (amacarolm@cox.net)

Today (10-4-05), as I was searching for Mooneyham families in the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX area, I found a Wm G and M Scott Mooneyham.  They are a very close to your information for the Old Union Church.

P.A. Watson Cemetery, Arlington, Texas. Highway 360 at Ave H.
Mooneyham, M. Scott 1846-1924
Mooneyham, Wm. G. 1842-1929
Mooneyham, J. S 18 Jun 1868-15 May 1940.
Mooneyham, J. S. 1877-1918

Markers 1-3 are Owen Brumley Funeral Home markers set in cement. # 3 is a foot stone.

My family is the Joseph William Mooneyham of the Peters Colony, Dallas, Texas. Joseph William had a brother, James J. also of the Peters Colony. They were sons of James Mooneyham of Cocke Co. TN.
I believe these families are of common ancestry.

Response from Justine Miller regarding the Carol D. Monroe message above:

Wayne, Thank you for sending me this information. I have photos of the Mooneyhams mentioned in the Watson Cemetery in Arlington, TX. I am a descendant. I live about 40 miles NW of Arlington. I will contact this person and I think she is right that there is a common ancestry, but it is way back there.

  • Question:  How is this woman related to the Dicie M. (Haston) Cummings Shockley whose life story is described on this site.

Jane Shockley

From:  Jim Gates (microjgates@msn.com)
Could this be the Jane Shockley who married James W. Haston?  She was born 5/29/1823 and died 1/27/1896 and is buried at Long Cemetery in Van Buren County, TN.  She was the daughter of William Shockley and Dorcus Hoodenpyle.  James Haston was born 8/24/1821 and died about 1858 and is buried at Big Fork Cemetery.
Note:  We have no evidence to indicate whether or not this Old Union "Jane Shockley" was the wife of James W. Haston.  Please contact us if you have evidence to support or contradict this possibility.
